Artist Interview: Derrick Pryce, Founder of Kebomusic

Artist Interviews, ARTlanta, Things To Do Atlanta

For my latest artist interview, I ventured over to the audio side of the arts to interview Derrick Pryce, known musically as Kebomusic.  We met several years ago, soon after I moved to Atlanta, and music was one of the many things we connected over.  As an artist, he takes his craft seriously, so I knew he’d be a great person to provide insight on the process of creating music and sharing it for the world to enjoy.

Tell me more about your musical background and why you decided to pursue it seriously?

I first learned to play the piano when I was around 6 years old, starting out with classical music.  I wasn’t really into it at the time and like many children I was not crazy about practicing.  I didn’t start getting into writing my own compositions on the piano until I was a teenager.  That’s when I discovered jazz chords.  That gave me the creativity to start coming up with my own material when sitting down at the instrument.  From there, I started playing in church and for different vocalists in the city.

Pursuing music seriously has always been something that I had wanted to do.  If not playing professionally in a band, then writing and producing.  Once I had the opportunity to purchase some equipment, I got started on production.

How would you describe your musical style?  Can you provide some insight on your creative process?

I would describe my musical style as soulful, positive grooves.  As far as putting it in a category, it would be a mixture of R+B, Soul, Jazz and Hip-Hop.  I have a variety of musical tastes and I try to draw from all my influences.

For the creative process, a song is conceived in a variety of different ways.  I may sit down at the keyboard and just start playing a few chords.  This would then inspire me to further flesh it out into a full song.  Lately I have been starting out with the drums.  I will start out by playing a few sounds on my digital drum kit and then work around that to create a song. Once the instrumental track is complete, I give it to my songwriter/vocalist and they will write the melody and lyrics.  We then go into the studio to mix it and then it’s finished.

Are you currently working on any new music?

Yes, as a matter a fact, I am.  I recently collaborated with vocalist/songwriter Shawndella of 19 Melodies on a new song.  We are currently in the studio mixing it.  This will be the next iTunes single and it hopefully should be out in the next few months.  In addition, I am also starting to write some new material for my new project.  This will be an instrumental EP.

What are the titles of the albums/projects that are currently available and where can people purchase them?

The album that is currently out is entitled Kebomusic Presents: The Experience The physical CD is available for purchase via CD BabyDigital version are available on iTunesAmazonSpotify and all other major digital retailers.

What is one piece of advice that you’d give to an inspiring musician?

One piece of advice that I would give to aspiring musicians is to get your music out there to be heard.  With the advent of the internet, anybody can create music on their computer and then publish it to the world.  30 years ago, artists had to have money to buy equipment to make music and some form of distribution to get their music to the masses.  The barrier to entry is now almost non-existent.  Of course, getting your music heard is only the first step and their are several other obstacles to overcome to actually become a successful artist.  Just getting it out there though is key.  You just never know who will hear your music or what new fans you will gain.

Where can people go to find more information about you and your music?
